Indications: Xelmet 850 is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control. In adults, it may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin. In children from 10 years of age and adolescents,it may be used as monotherapy or in combination with insulin.A reduction of diabetic complications has been shown in overweight type 2 diabetic adult patients treated with metformin as first-line therapy after diet failure.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Xelmet 850 must be individualized based on both effectiveness and tolerance, while not exceeding the maximum recommended daily doses. It should be administered orally with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Renal function should be assessed before initiating treatment and at least annually thereafter. Xelmet 850 is contraindicated in patients with an eGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m².
Side Effects:Common side effects associated with Xelmet 850 may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.A metallic taste may also occur. Precautions:Xelmet 850 is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to metformin, severe renal failure (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), any type of acute metabolic acidosis (such as lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis), and acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function (e.g., dehydration, severe infection, shock).Caution should be exercised in patients with conditions that may cause tissue hypoxia (e.g., cardiac or respiratory failure, recent myocardial infarction), hepatic insufficiency, and acute alcohol intoxication.
