Cartilex Plus: Comprehensive Support for Joint and Bone Health
Cartilex Plus is a dietary supplement indicated primarily for the treatment of osteoarthritis affecting various joints such as the knee, hip, spine, and hand. Beyond osteoarthritis, it is also beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, migraine, various skin problems (e.g., psoriasis), vascular complications (e.g., atherosclerosis), kidney stones, and inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., ulcerative colitis, leaky gut syndrome).
How Cartilex Plus Works (Pharmacology)
Cartilex Plus combines Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate, two natural components crucial for joint health, which work synergistically.
- Glucosamine: This natural amino-sugar is a fundamental building block for the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) like Hyaluronic Acid, Keratan Sulfate, and Chondroitin Sulfate. These GAGs bind with proteins to form proteoglycans, the essential components of articular cartilage. In osteoarthritis, cartilage deteriorates. Supplementing with Glucosamine Sulfate increases the body's Glucosamine levels, facilitating the production and repair of cartilage. It also activates chondrocytes (cartilage cells) to produce more GAGs and proteoglycans.
- Chondroitin Sulfate: This is a glycosaminoglycan found in connective tissue, particularly in articular cartilage. Chondroitin Sulfate acts similarly to Glucosamine Sulfate by providing substrates for proteoglycans. Additionally, Chondroitin protects existing healthy cartilage from premature decline by inhibiting the MMP (Matrix metalloproteinase) enzyme, which breaks down proteoglycans.
Synergistic Effect: The combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate shows a synergistic effect. This combination has been shown to be highly effective in severe cases of osteoarthritis, treating both the signs and symptoms of the disease and potentially modifying its progression. It can help prevent osteoarthritis in normal adults and has been found to be as effective as NSAIDs in osteoarthritic pain, with significantly better tolerability and clinical compliance. It is also beneficial during the repair phase of musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries like tendon or ligament strains.

Important Considerations & Warnings
It is crucial to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Cartilex Plus.
Contraindications:
- Proven hypersensitivity (e.g., allergic to shellfish or sulfur) to Glucosamine and Chondroitin.
Side Effects:
- Safety studies generally show no demonstrable serious side effects.
- Rarely occurring side effects are typically mild and reversible, such as mild intestinal flatulence, similar to placebo.
Interactions:
- No significant drug interactions have been reported with antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, nitrates, antiarrhythmics, anxiolytics, hypoglycemic agents, antisecretives, or antiasthmatics.
- Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin, Heparin): Chondroitin may enhance the blood-thinning effects of these medications. Close monitoring is advised.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Women who are pregnant or who could become pregnant should not supplement with Glucosamine Sulfate or Chondroitin Sulfate. These supplements have not been sufficiently studied to determine their effects on a developing fetus.
- No studies have evaluated their use during lactation. It should be taken with caution and medical advice during pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
- Diabetes Mellitus: Patients with diabetes are advised to monitor blood glucose levels regularly when taking Glucosamine, as it may affect blood sugar.
- Renal or Hepatic Insufficiency: No specific studies were performed in patients with kidney or liver insufficiency. However, the toxicological and pharmacokinetic profile does not indicate limitations. Administration to patients with severe hepatic or renal insufficiency should be under appropriate medical supervision.
- Children: Children should not be supplemented with Glucosamine and Chondroitin.
Overdose Effects:
- There is no specific data available regarding overdose of Cartilex Plus. In case of suspected overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
