A-Cal 500

Presentation: Tablets containing 1.25 g Calcium Carbonate BP equivalent to 500 mg elemental Calcium. Available in strips. Manufactured by The ACME Laboratories Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Ingredients:Calcium Carbonate BP 1.25 g (equivalent to 500 mg elemental Calcium).

Indications:

  • In calcium deficiency states including osteomalacia, rickets, and malabsorptionsyndromes affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract.
  • As therapeutic supplementation during inadequate diet, particularly those associated with the increased demand of childhood, old age, pregnancy, and lactation.
  • As a phosphate binder in patientswith hyperphosphataemia and chronic renal failure to prevent renal osteodystrophy.
  • As an adjunct to conventional therapy in the arrest or slowing down of bone demineralization in osteoporosis or when other effective treatment is contraindicated.
  • Also effective as an antacid for short-term relief of dyspeptic symptoms.

Dosage & Administration:

  • As a dietary supplement: 1 tablet daily. Dosage may be tailored to the individual patient depending on the specific condition. In pregnancy and lactation, the recommended daily dose of calcium is 1200-1500 mg (may require more than one tablet).
  • As an antacid: Adults: Equivalent to 540-2000 mg Calcium Carbonate per day. Children: Half of the adult dose.
  • As a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure: Doses vary from 2.5-9.0 gm Calcium Carbonate per day, adjusted according to the individual patient and given with meals to maximize phosphate binding.

Side Effects: Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and may cause constipation. Hypercalcaemia is rarely produced by administration of calcium alone but may occur when large doses are given to patients with chronic renal failure.

Precautions: Contraindicated in hypercalcaemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Use cautiously in patients with sarcoidosis, renal or cardiac disease, and in patients receiving cardiac glycosides (digoxin), requiring careful monitoring of serum calcium levels. May interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations. Modification of vitamin D therapy may be requiredin chronic renal failure to avoid hypercalcaemia when Calcium Carbonate is used as the primary phosphate binder.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place.
