Indications: Zoxan (Nitazoxanide) is an antiprotozoal agent indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by:
Dosage and Administration: Zoxan is recommended to be administered with food. The dosage depends on the age of the patient and the formulation used.
Shake the suspension well before use.
Side Effects: The most frequent side effects reported with Zoxan are abdominal pain, vomiting, and headache. These side effects are typically mild and transient. Very rare side effects may include nausea, anorexia, flatulence, increased appetite, enlarged salivary glands, increased creatinine & SGPT level, pruritus, rhinitis, sweating, dizziness,and discolored urine.
Precautions: Zoxan (Nitazoxanide) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to nitazoxanide or any components of the preparation. Caution should be exercised when administering Zoxan concurrently with other highly plasma protein-bound drugs with a narrow therapeutic index. Zoxan must be administered with caution to patients with hepatic & biliary disease and to patients with renal disease.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: The US FDA pregnancy category for Nitazoxanide is B. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Nitazoxanide has been shown to be excreted in human milk. So, caution should be exercised when Zoxan is administered during lactation.
Storage: Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
