Zixol

Presentation: Available as tablets containing elemental Zinc (various strengths like 20 mg) and syrup containing Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate (e.g., 10 mg elemental Zinc per 5 ml in 100 ml bottles). Manufactured by UniMed UniHealth Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Ingredients: Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate USP (amount of elemental Zinc specified on packaging). Some formulations like Zixol-B may also contain B-complex vitamins (Thiamine, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine, Nicotinamide).

Indications: Indicated for the treatment and prevention of zinc deficiency, which can occur due to inadequate diet, malabsorption, excessive loss in conditions like diarrhea, trauma, or burns. Zinc is crucial for immune function, wound healing, growth and development, and sensory functions like taste and smell. Zixol-B is also indicated for Vitamin B deficiencies.

Dosage & Administration: Dosage depends on age and the severity of the deficiency.

  • Tablet (Adults & Children over 30 kg): 1 to 2 tablets 2 to 3 times daily or as recommended by a physician.
  • Syrup (Adults): 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 2 to 3 times daily.
  • Syrup (Children): 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 1 to 3 times daily.
  • Syrup (Infants): 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) 1 to 2 times daily. It is most effective if taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals but can be taken with food if it causes stomach upset. For dispersible tablets, dissolve in water before administration.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated. However, some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach upset.

Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to zinc or any other component. In acute renal failure, zinc accumulation may occur, requiring dose adjustment. Concomitant intake of tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics and zinc may decrease the absorption of both; maintain a 3-hour interval. Pyridoxine (in Zixol-B) may reduce the efficacy of levodopa.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not store above 30°C.
