Zimax 500

• Presentation:
  • Each film-coated tablet contains Azithromycin USP 500 mg as Azithromycin Dihydrate USP.
  • Available in strips of [mention typical strip size, e.g., 6 tablets].
• Indications: Zimax 500 mg is prescribed for infections caused by susceptible organisms in:
  • Lower respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia.  
  • Upper respiratory tract infections, including sinusitis and pharyngitis/tonsillitis.
  • Otitis media.  
  • Skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.  
• Dosage and Administration:
  • Adults: 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days, or 500 mg as a single dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2-5 for a total of 4 days.  
  • For sexually transmitted diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatisin adults, the dose is 1 gm given as a single dose, or 500 mg once on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 2 days.  
  • It should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after eating.
• Pharmacology:
  • Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic belonging to the azalide subclass.It inhibits microbial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible organisms.  
• Side Effects:
  • Common side effects are usually mild and transient and may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort (pain/cramps), flatulence, diarrhoea, and loose stools.  
• Precautions:
  • Absorption of Azithromycin is reduced in the presence of food and antacids. Take Zimax 500 mg at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. Do not take antacids 2 hours before or after taking Zimax 500 mg Tablet.  
  • Care should be taken with co-administration with drugs that may prolong the QT interval.  
  • Should be avoided in patients receiving ergot alkaloids due to the potential for ergotism.
  • Care should be taken when co-administering with Cyclosporin and Digoxin.
• Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic.  
  • Should not be used with ergot derivatives.
  • Patients with liver disorders should use it with caution.
• Storage:
  • Store below 30°C.  
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
• Therapeutic Class:
  • Macrolides.
