Indications

Virux-HC cream is indicated for the early treatment of recurrent herpes labialis, commonly known as cold sores. It is used in adults and children aged 6 years and older to:

  • Reduce the likelihood of cold sores developing into ulcerative lesions.
  • Shorten the time it takes for the lesion to heal.

Pharmacology

Virux-HC cream combines two active ingredients:

  • Acyclovir: This is a synthetic antiviral agent. Acyclovir is highly selective for herpes viruses because a viral enzyme (thymidine kinase) converts it into an active form that inhibits viral DNA replication. This stops the virus from multiplying.
  • Hydrocortisone: This is a glucocorticoid that has anti-inflammatory properties. When applied topically, it helps to suppress the visible signs of inflammation associated with the cold sore, such as redness and swelling.

Dosage & Administration

The cream should be applied topically to the affected area 5 times per day for 5 days. It is most effective when therapy is started as early as possible after the first signs and symptoms of a cold sore appear.

Contraindications

There are no known contraindications for the use of this cream.

Side Effects

The most common adverse reactions reported are local skin reactions, occurring in less than 1% of users. These include:

  • Drying or flaking of the skin.
  • Burning or tingling sensation.
  • Redness (erythema).
  • Pigmentation changes.
  • Signs and symptoms of inflammation at the application site.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This cream is classified as Pregnancy Category B. There are no adequate studies on its use in pregnant women. Systemic exposure to its components is minimal after topical application. It is not known whether Acyclovir or Hydrocortisone are excreted in human breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administering it to a nursing woman.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Virux-HC cream should not be used in the eye, inside the mouth or nose, or on the genitals.
  • Patients should seek medical advice if a cold sore does not heal within 2 weeks.
  • The safety and effectiveness of this cream have not been established for children under 6 years of age.
