Utrogestan 100 

Presentation: Utrogestan 100 is presented as soft gelatin capsules, each containing 100mg of micronized progesterone. The capsules are typically round and slightly yellow, containing a whitish oily suspension. They are usually available in blister packs.

Indications: Utrogestan (progesterone) is indicated for various conditions related to progesterone deficiency, including:

• Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in postmenopausal women with an intact uterus, used in combination with estrogen to counteract the estrogen-induced risk of endometrial hyperplasia.
• Luteal phase support during Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) cycles.
• Prevention of preterm birth in women with a singleton pregnancy and a short cervix and/or a history of spontaneous preterm birth (vaginal use).
• Maintenance of pregnancy in cases of threatened or recurrent abortion due to luteal insufficiency.
• Treatment of secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods) due to low progesterone.
• Management of dysfunctional uterine bleeding.
• Treatment of premenstrual syndrome and benign breast disease (mastopathy).

Dosage and Administration: The dosage and route of administration (oral or vaginal) depend on the indication and are determined by the physician.

• Oral use: Usually taken in the evening at bedtime, preferably on an empty stomach as food can increase drowsiness. The dose ranges from 100 to 300 mg daily, depending on the condition. In HRT, it is often used for the last 12-14 days of each estrogen therapy cycle.
• Vaginal use: Capsules are inserted deep into the vagina, particularly for luteal support in ART and prevention of preterm birth. The dose is usually 200-600 mg per day, divided into one or more administrations.

Follow your doctor's specific instructions carefully. If drowsiness occurs, especially with oral use, the dose may be adjusted or taken solely at bedtime.

Side Effects: Common side effects with oral use may include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, altered menstrual cycles, breast tenderness, and abdominal discomfort. Less common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and mood changes. Vaginal use may cause local irritation, itching, or discharge.

Patients should be aware that Utrogestan can cause drowsiness and should exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.

Precautions: Utrogestan (progesterone) is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to progesterone or any excipients (including soya or peanut), severe liver dysfunction, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, certain hormone-dependent cancers (e.g., breast, uterine), active thromboembolic disorders (e.g., deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism), and porphyria.

Caution should be exercised in patients with conditions such as epilepsy, migraine, asthma, cardiac or renal dysfunction, and diabetes mellitus.

Use during pregnancy is generally not contraindicated and may be indicated for certain conditions, but it should be under medical supervision. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended due to the potential passage of progesterone into breast milk.

Storage: Store Utrogestan capsules below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate unless specifically instructed.
