Thixtra Tablet - (500mcg+10mg)

Generic Name: Flupentixol + Melitracen

Strength: 0.5 mg + 10 mg (500mcg is equivalent to 0.5 mg)

Dosage Form: Tablet

Indication:

Thixtra is a combination medication indicated for the treatment of:  

  • Anxiety 
  • Depression 
  • Apathy 
  • Psychogenic depression 
  • Depressive neuroses 
  • Masked depression 
  • Psychosomatic affections accompanied by anxiety and apathy 
  • Menopausal depressions 
  • Dysphoria and depression in alcoholicsand drug addicts.

This combination contains flupentixol, a neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties at low doses, and melitracen, a bipolar thymoleptic with activating properties at low doses. Together, they provide antidepressant, anxiolytic, and activating effects.

Dosage and Administration:

For adults, the usual dose is 2 tablets orally daily, in the morning and at noon. In severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.

For elderly patients, the usual dose is 1 tablet in the morning.

The maintenance dose is usually 1 tablet orally in the morning.  

In cases of insomnia or severe restlessness, additional treatment with a sedativeduring the acute phase may be recommended.

Thixtra tablets should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Side Effects:

In the recommended doses, side effects are rare. They may include transient restlessness and insomnia.

Precautions:

This tablet may enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants. Simultaneous use with MAO inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises and should be avoided within two weeks of MAO inhibitor use.

It may reduce the antihypertensive effect of guanethidine and similar drugs and enhance the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline.

Use with caution in patients previously treated with sedating tranquilizers, withdrawing them gradually.

Not recommended for excitable or overactive patients as its activating effect may worsen these characteristics.

It should preferably not be given during pregnancy and lactation.

Contraindications:

  • Immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction. 
  • Defects in bundle-branch conduction. 
  • Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma. 
  • Acute alcohol, barbiturate, and opiate intoxications. 
  • Patients who have received an MAO-inhibitor within the last two weeks.

Drug Interactions:

Thixtra may enhance the response to alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants. Simultaneous administration of MAO-inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises. Neuroleptics and thymolepticsmay reduce the antihypertensive effect of guanethidine and similar acting compounds, and thymoleptics may enhance the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline.
