Presentation: Each controlled-release tablet contains Carbamazepine BP 200 mg.
Indications: Tegretol CR is indicated for the treatment of:
Dosage and Administration: Dosage must be individualized by the physician. Initiate treatment at the lowest effective dose.
Tegretol CR tablets are controlled-release and should be swallowed whole; they should not be crushed or chewed. They can be taken with or without food. When converting from immediate-release carbamazepine to Tegretol CR, the total daily dose should generally be maintained.
Side Effects: Very common side effects include dizziness, ataxia, somnolence, fatigue, diplopia, nausea, and vomiting. Common side effects include headache, dry mouth, blurred vision, accommodation disorder, and skin rash. Serious side effects can include blood dyscrasias (e.g., agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia), Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and liver damage.
Precautions: Before starting Tegretol CR, inform your physician about any history of bone marrow depression, active hepatic disease, serious cardiovascular disease, or hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or structurally related compounds (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants). Genetic testing for HLA-B*1502 allele is recommended in patients with ancestry in genetically at-risk populations (e.g., Asian). Carbamazepine can interact with many other drugs, including other antiepileileptics, oral contraceptives, anticoagulants, and certain antibiotics. Inform your physician about all medications you are taking. May increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Avoid abrupt discontinuation. Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
