Generic Name: Risperidone
Indications:
Acute and chronic psychoses
Schizophrenia
Mania in bipolar disorder
Pharmacology:
Sperdal 4mg is a selective monoaminergic antagonist with a high affinity for serotoninergic 5-HT2 and dopaminergic D2 receptors.
Dosage & Administration:
Psychoses: 2 mg in 1-2 divided doses on the 1st day, then 4 mg in 1-2 divided doses on the 2nd day. Usual dose range is 4-6 mg daily.
Mania: Initially 2 mg once daily, increased if necessary in steps of 1 mg daily. Usual dose range is 1-6 mg daily.
Schizophrenia: Initially 1 mg twice daily, with increases of 1 mg twice daily on the 2nd and 3rd day as tolerated, to a target dose of 3 mg twice daily by the 3rd day.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the product.
Side Effects:
Insomnia, agitation, anxiety, headache
Less commonly: drowsiness, impaired concentration, fatigue, blurred vision, constipation, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain
Hyperprolactinemia, urine incontinence, tachycardia, hypertension, edema, rash, rhinitis, cerebrovascular accident, neutropenia
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Sperdal 4mg should be used during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Lactation: Women receiving Sperdal 4mg should not breastfeed.
Precautions & Warnings:
Pre-existing cardiovascular diseases
Discontinue use if signs and symptoms of tardive dyskinesia occur
Renal and hepatic impairment
Elderly
Epilepsy
Parkinson's disease
Pregnancy
Storage Conditions:
Do not store above 30°C.
