Picosul is a product of Opsonin Pharma Ltd.in Bangladesh. The solution is clear and colourless to slightly yellowish.

Indications:Picosul (Sodium Picosulfate) is a stimulant laxative indicated for the short-term relief of constipation of any etiology, including prolonged and recurrent constipation. It can also be used for bowel clearance before surgery, childbirth, or radiological investigations.

Dosage and Administration:Picosul Drops are for oral administration. The dosage should be measured carefully using the provided dropper and can be given once daily, usually at bedtime, to produce an evacuation the following morning. It is recommended to start with the lowest effective dose.

  • Adults and children over 10 years: 0.67 - 1.33 ml (5-10 mg) per day as a single dose.
  • Children aged 4-10 years: 0.33 - 0.67 ml (2.5-5 mg) per day as a single dose.
  • Children from 1 month to 4 years: 0.25 ml per kg of body weight per day as a single dose (maximum 0.67 ml or 5 mg per day).

Ensure the patient drinks plenty of fluids during treatment to maintain hydration.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Picosul (Sodium Picosulfate) may include:

  • Abdominal discomfort, cramps, or pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Less common side effects may include dizziness and syncope (fainting). Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash or itching have also been reported. Prolonged excessive use may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance, particularly hypokalemia.

Precautions: Picosul (Sodium Picosulfate) is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Ileus or intestinal obstruction.
  • Severe painful and/or feverish acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis).
  • Acute inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • Severe dehydration.
  • Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any other component of theproduct.

Caution should be exercised in pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and individuals with liver disease or epilepsy. The concomitant use of diuretics or adreno-corticosteroids may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance. Concurrent administration of antibiotics may reduce the laxative action.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: While animal studies have not shown harmful effects, it is generally recommended to avoid the use of Picosul, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy, unless clearly needed. Clinical data suggest that Sodium Picosulfate does not pass into breast milk, so it can probably be used during breastfeeding. However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before use.

Storage: Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
