Picodin 

Presentation: Picodin, available in Bangladesh, is an oral solution containing Sodium Picosulfate at a concentration of 5 mg per 5 ml. It is typically available in bottles of varying sizes (e.g., 15 ml, 30 ml). 

Indications: Picodin (Sodium Picosulfate) is indicated for the short-term relief of constipation. It is also used for bowel cleansing prior to diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy or surgery.  

Dosage and Administration: Picodin oral solution is for oral administration, usually as a single dose at night to produce a bowel movement the following morning. The dosage depends on the age of the patient and the severity of constipation.

• Adults and children over 10 years: 5-10 ml (1-2 teaspoonfuls) once daily at night.
• Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 ml (½ - 1 teaspoonful) once daily at night.
• Children under 4 years: Dosage should be determined by a physician, usually based on body weight (0.25 ml/kg body weight per day).

Picodin can be taken directly or mixed with water. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day while taking this medication.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Picodin (Sodium Picosulfate) may include abdominal discomfort, cramps, and diarrhea. Less common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Prolonged excessive use may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance, particularly hypokalemia.

Precautions: Picodin (Sodium Picosulfate) is contraindicated in patients with:

• Ileus or intestinal obstruction.
• Severe painful and/or feverish acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis).
• Acute inflammatory bowel diseases.  
• Severe dehydration.  
• Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any other component of theproduct.

Caution should be exercised in pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and individuals with liver disease or epilepsy. Prolonged use of laxatives should be avoided as it may lead to dependence.  

Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: While studies in animals have not shown harmful effects, it is advisable to consult a physician before using Picodin during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Clinical data show that neither the active moiety of sodium picosulfate nor its glucuronides are excreted into breast milk in significant amounts.However, medical advice should still be sought before use during breastfeeding.

Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
