Pednisol 20 

Presentation: Each tablet contains Prednisolone BP 20 mg. Available in strips.

Indications: Pednisol 20 mg is a corticosteroid indicated for the treatment of various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including:

• Severe allergic reactions
• Asthma exacerbations
• Rheumatic disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus)
• Skin disorders (e.g., severe eczema, pemphigus)
• Eye disorders (e.g., uveitis)
• Nephrotic syndrome
• Certain blood disorders (e.g., autoimmune hemolytic anemia)
• Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
• Endocrine disorders (e.g., adrenocortical insufficiency)
• Prevention of organ rejection after transplantation

Dosage and Administration: Dosage varies widely depending on the condition being treated, its severity, and the patient's response.

• Adults: The initial dose may range from 5 to 60 mg per day. For Pednisol 20 mg, the physician will determine the number of tablets based on the required dose. Maintenance doses are usually lower and are gradually reduced to the lowest effective dose.
• Children: Dosage is usually calculated based on body weight and the specific condition.

The total daily dose is usually administered orally in single or divided doses. It is recommended to take Pednisol with food to minimize stomach upset. Do not stop taking this medication abruptly, especially after long-term use, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms; dosage should be gradually reduced under medical supervision.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

• Increased appetite and weight gain
• Fluid retention (swelling)
• Mood changes (e.g., euphoria, depression, irritability)
• Difficulty sleeping
• Increased sweating
• Indigestion

Long-term use may lead to more serious side effects such as:

• Osteoporosis (thinning of bones)
• Increased risk of infections
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes mellitus
• Cataracts and glaucoma
• Muscle weakness
• Cushing's syndrome (moon face, weight gain in the upper body)
• Skin thinning and bruising

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections and known hypersensitivity to prednisolone or other corticosteroids.
• Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, peptic ulcer, osteoporosis, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and psychiatric disorders.
• Inform your doctor if you have any infections or have recently been exposed to chickenpox or measles.
• Avoid live vaccinations while on this medication.
• Long-term use in children may affect growth.
• Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be under strict medical supervision.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
