Oscal-D Forte

Presentation: Tablets containing a higher strength combination of calcium (as calcium carbonate) and Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) compared to standard formulations. The specific strengths of calcium and Vitamin D3 will be indicated on the packaging and may vary depending on the formulation available in Bangladesh. "Forte" typically implies a higher dose.

Indications: Indicated for the prevention and treatment of significant calcium and Vitamin D deficiency, particularly in conditions requiring higher supplementation such as established osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and in individuals at high risk of these deficiencies. It is also used to support bone health in the elderly, those with very limited sun exposure, and individuals with malabsorption issues affecting calcium and Vitamin D.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose is one tablet once or twice daily, preferably with or after a meal to enhance calcium absorption, or as directed by a physician. Due to the higher strength, the dosage may be less frequent than standard calcium and Vitamin D supplements. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated when taken as directed. However, due to the potentially higher doses, there might be an increased risk of gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation, flatulence, nausea, or abdominal pain. High doses can lead to hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood), with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, increased thirst, and increased urination.

Precautions: Use with caution in individuals with hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine), kidney stones, or kidney disease. Consult a physician before use if you have hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, or are taking other medications, especially cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin) or thiazide diuretics, as interactions may occur. Calcium and Vitamin D can interact with various medications, including tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, and iron preparations; it is advisable to separate the administration of these medications by a few hours. Regular monitoring of serum calcium levels may be recommended by your doctor, especially with higher doses.
