Orgatril

Presentation: Each tablet contains 5 mg of lynestrenol.

Indications: Orgatril is a synthetic progestogen indicated for various gynecological conditions, including:

• Secondary amenorrhea: Absence of menstruation in women who have previously had periods.
• Abnormal uterine bleeding: Such as menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding), metrorrhagia (bleeding between periods), and polymenorrhea (frequent periods).
• Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.
• Postponement of menstruation: For short-term use in specific circumstances.
• Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): As a progestogen component in combination with estrogen in postmenopausal women with an intact uterus.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Orgatril varies depending on the specific condition being treated. The tablets are for oral administration and should be swallowed whole with water. It is recommended to take the tablet at the same time each day.

• Secondary amenorrhea: Usually 5-10 mg daily for 20-25 days, with a withdrawal bleed expected within a few days after stopping.
• Abnormal uterine bleeding: Usually 5-10 mg daily for 10 days, repeated for several cycles if necessary.
• Endometriosis: Usually 5-10 mg daily for 5-6 months or longer.
• Postponement of menstruation: 5 mg daily, starting a few days before the expected onset of menstruation and continued for as long as postponement is desired, up to a maximum of 2 weeks. Withdrawal bleeding will occur a few days after stopping.
• Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): The dosage and duration depend on the estrogen regimen. Typically, 2.5-5 mg daily for 10-14 days per 28-day cycle, or continuous daily administration.

The physician will determine the appropriate dosage and duration of treatment based on the individual patient's needs and response.

Side Effects:

• Common: Changes in menstrual bleeding patterns (spotting, breakthrough bleeding, amenorrhea), weight gain, fluid retention, breast tenderness, headache, decreased libido, and acne.
• Uncommon: Nausea, dizziness, mood changes, and hirsutism (increased hair growth).
• Rare: Allergic reactions.

Precautions:

Orgatril should be used with caution in patients with:

• Cardiovascular disorders or a history of thromboembolic disease.
• Severe hepatic impairment.
• Porphyria.
• Conditions that may be exacerbated by fluid retention (e.g., epilepsy, migraine, asthma).
• Depression or a history of severe depression.

A thorough medical history and physical examination should be conducted prior to starting Orgatril. Women should be monitored for signs and symptoms of thromboembolic disorders. In HRT, the risks and benefits should be carefully considered, especially in relation to cardiovascular disease and breast cancer.

Orgatril is contraindicated in pregnancy and should not be used during breastfeeding.
