OP 40 

Presentation: OP 40 is available as enteric-coated capsules containing 40 mg of omeprazole.

Indications: OP 40 (omeprazole) is indicated for the treatment and management of various conditions related to excessive stomach acid production, including:

• Gastric and duodenal ulcers
• Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Severe ulcerating reflux esophagitis
• Long-term management of acid reflux disease
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
• Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during general anesthesia
• In combination with antibiotics for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori associated with peptic ulcer disease.
• NSAID-associated duodenal and gastric ulcers and their prophylaxis in patients at risk.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose of OP 40 is one 40 mg capsule once daily. However, the dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the specific condition being treated and the patient's response, as determined by a physician.

• For gastric ulcers, GERD, and reflux esophagitis, the usual duration is 4 to 8 weeks.
• For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the starting dose is usually higher and adjusted based on acid output.
• For H. pylori eradication, omeprazole 20 mg twice daily is often used in combination with antibiotics for one week. If OP 40 is prescribed for this, the doctor will specify the regimen.
• OP 40 capsules should be swallowed whole and taken on an empty stomach, preferably at least one hour before a meal. Do not chew or crush the capsules.

Side Effects: Omeprazole is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects may include:

• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Flatulence
• Abdominal pain
• Constipation

Less common side effects may include dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, skin rash, and changes in liver enzymes. Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole may be associated with an increased risk of bone fracture, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hypomagnesemia.

Precautions: Before taking OP 40, inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially liver problems. Exclude the possibility of gastric malignancy before starting treatment, as symptom relief with omeprazole can delay diagnosis. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be with caution and only if clearly needed. OP 40 may interact with other medications, including certain antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole), anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), antiplatelet drugs (e.g., clopidogrel), and some HIV medications. Long-term use may require periodic monitoring by your doctor.

Storage: Store OP 40 capsules below 25°C or 30°C (depending on the specific product) in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Store in the original packaging to protect from moisture.
