Omizit 

Presentation: Each enteric-coated capsule of Omizit 20 contains Omeprazole BP 20 mg. Omizit 20 is a product of The White Horse Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh and is usually available in blister packs. The capsules are designed to release the active ingredient in the small intestine.

Indications: Omizit (Omeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) indicated for the treatment and management of conditions associated with excessive stomach acid production, including:

  • Gastric ulcer
  • Duodenal ulcer
  • NSAID-associated gastric and duodenal ulcer
  • Prophylaxis in patients with a history of NSAID-associated gastric and duodenal ulcer
  • Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Long-term management of acid reflux disease  
  • Acid-related dyspepsia  
  • Severe ulcerating reflux esophagitis  
  • Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during general anesthesia  
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome  
  • Helicobacter pylori-induced peptic ulcer(in combination with antibiotics)

Dosage and Administration: Omizit 20 capsules should be swallowed whole with liquid and should not be opened, chewed, or crushed. It is recommended to take Omizit on an empty stomach, at least one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. The duration of treatment depends on the condition being treated.

  • Benign gastric and duodenal ulcer:20 mg once daily for 4 weeks in duodenal ulceration, 8 weeks in gastric ulceration. In severe or recurrentcases, the dose may be increased to 40 mg daily.
  • NSAID-associated duodenal or gastric ulcer: 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks, continued for a further 4 weeks if not fully healed. 20 mg once daily is used as prophylaxis in patients with a history of NSAID-associatedulcers.  
  • Gastro-esophageal reflux disease:20 mg once daily for 4 weeks, continued for further 4-8 weeks if not fully healed.A maintenance dose of 20 mg once daily may be used. In severe cases refractory to other treatment, 40 mg once daily may be given for 8 weeks. For long-term management, 10-20 mg daily may be used.
  • Acid-related dyspepsia:10-20 mg once daily for 2-4 weeks.  
  • Prophylaxis of acid aspiration:40 mg on the preceding evening, then 40 mg 2-6 hours before surgery.  
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome:Initially 60 mg once daily; usual range 20-120 mg daily. Ifthe daily dose is more than 80 mg, it should be divided and given twice daily.
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication: Omeprazole 20 mg twice daily is recommended in association with antimicrobial agents such as Amoxicillin and Metronidazole, or Clarithromycin and Metronidazole, for one week.

The dosage and duration of treatment should be determined by a physician based on the individual patient's condition and response to therapy.

Side Effects: Omeprazole is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects reported with Omizit may include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence

Less common side effects may include dizziness, paraesthesia, insomnia, dry mouth, increased liver enzymes, skin rash, and pruritus. Long-term use may be associated with a slightly increased risk of bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and vitamin B12 deficiency.

Precautions: Omizit (Omeprazole) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any other proton pump inhibitors. Caution should be exercised in patients with:

  • Severe liver impairment (dosage adjustment may be needed).
  • Kidney disease.
  • A history of allergic reactions to other PPIs.
  • Risk factors for osteoporosis (long-term use may increase the risk of fractures).

Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, asomeprazole can interact with certain medicines, such as warfarin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, and diazepam. The possibility of gastric malignancy should be excluded before starting treatment.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Omizit should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. It is advisable to consulta doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy. Omeprazole is excreted in breast milk, but is not likely to influence the child when therapeutic doses are used.  

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
