Ome 20

Presentation: Each gastro-resistant tablet or capsule of Ome 20 contains Omeprazole BP 20 mg. Ome 20 is a product marketed by various pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh and is usually available in blister packs. The formulation is typically enteric-coated to prevent dissolution in the stomach.

Indications: Ome (Omeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) indicated for the treatment and management of conditions associated with excessive stomach acid production, including:

  • Duodenal ulcers
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Reflux esophagitis (erosive esophagitis)
  • Long-term management of acid reflux disease
  • Acid-related dyspepsia
  • Prevention of acid aspiration during general anesthesia
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • In combination with antibiotics for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulcer disease.
  • Prevention of NSAID-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients at risk.

Dosage and Administration: Ome 20 tablets or capsules should be swallowed whole with liquid and should not be chewed or crushed. It is recommended to take Ome once daily, preferably in the morning before food. The duration of treatment depends on the condition being treated.

  • Duodenal ulcers: 20 mg once daily for 2-4 weeks. In severe or recurrent cases, the dose may be increased to 40 mg daily. For maintenance, 20 mg once daily may be used.
  • Gastric ulcers: 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. In severe or recurrent cases, the dose may be increased to 40 mg daily.
  • GERD: 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks, which may be continued for a further 4-8 weeks if healing is incomplete. For long-term management, 10-20 mg daily may be used.
  • Acid-related dyspepsia:10-20 mg once daily for 2-4 weeks.
  • Prophylaxis of acid aspiration:40 mg on the preceding evening, then 40 mg 2-6 hours before surgery.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome:Initially 60 mg once daily, with dosage adjusted based on individual needs, ranging from 20-120 mg daily. Doses above 80 mg should be divided and given twice daily.
  • H. pylori eradication: Ome 20 mg twice daily is recommended in association with specific antimicrobial agents (e.g., Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin) for one week.
  • Prevention of NSAID-associated ulcers: 20 mg once daily.

The dosage and duration of treatment should be determined by a physician based on the individual patient's condition and response to therapy.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Ome (Omeprazole) may include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation

Less common side effects may include dizziness, insomnia, paraesthesia, dry mouth, increased liver enzymes, skin rash, and pruritus. Long-term use may be associated with a slightly increased risk of bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and vitamin B12 deficiency.
