Presentation: Oral Solution

Indications:

  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with:

    • Chemotherapy

    • Radiotherapy

    • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV)

Dosage and Administration:

Dosage and administration vary depending on the specific use and patient age. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV):

    • Adults: 8 mg orally, 3 times a day.

    • Children: The dose is determined by the child's weight or body surface area.

  • Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (RINV):

    • Adults: 8mg orally 3 times a day.

  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV):

    • Adults: 16 mg orally, 1 hour before anesthesia.

    • Specific dosing adjustments are needed for patients with hepatic impairment.

    • Consult a healthcare professional for precise dosage instructions, especially for children and those with specific medical conditions.

Side Effects:

  • Common:

    • Headache

    • Constipation

    • Diarrhea

    • Fever

  • Less Common:

    • Dizziness

    • Drowsiness

    • Fatigue

  • Rare:

    • Arrhythmias

    • Hypotension

    • Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, itching, swelling)

    • Seizures

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with:

    • Liver problems

    • Heart conditions (e.g., prolonged QT interval)

    • Electrolyte imbalances

  • Ondansetron may mask symptoms of ileus or gastric outlet obstruction.

  • Monitor ECG in patients with congenital long QT syndrome.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to ondansetron or other serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists.

  • Concomitant use with apomorphine.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: Ondansetron should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus.

  • Lactation: Ondansetron is excreted in breast milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or the drug, considering the importance of the drug to the mother.
