Nitoxin 

Presentation:Nitoxin is a brand name for Nitazoxanide.It is available as tablets in various strengths (e.g., 500 mg) and as an oral suspension (e.g., 100 mg/5 ml).The specific presentation and marketing company in Bangladesh may vary. Tablets are usually available in blister packs, and suspensions in bottles of varying sizes.  

Indications:Nitoxin (Nitazoxanide) is an antiprotozoal agent indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by:  

  • Cryptosporidium parvum   
  • Giardia lamblia   
  • Entamoeba histolytica   

Dosage and Administration:Nitoxin is recommended to be administered with food.The dosage depends on the age of the patient and the formulation used.  

  • Tablet (500 mg):
    • Adults and children 12 years or above: 1 tablet (500 mg) every 12 hours for 3 days.  
  • Suspension (100 mg/5 ml):  

    • Children 1-3 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) every 12 hours for 3 days.  
    • Children 4-11 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) every 12 hours for 3 days.
    • Adults and children 12 years or above: 25 ml (5 teaspoonfuls) every 12 hours for 3 days.  

     

Side Effects: The most frequent side effects reported with Nitoxin are abdominal pain, vomiting, and headache. These side effects are typically mild and transient. Other less common side effects may include nausea, anorexia, and flatulence.  

Precautions:Nitoxin (Nitazoxanide) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to nitazoxanide or any components of the preparation.Caution should be exercised when administering Nitoxin concurrently with other highly plasma protein-bound drugs with a narrow therapeutic index.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: The US FDA pregnancy category for Nitazoxanide is B. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known if Nitazoxanide is excreted in human milk.Caution should be exercised when administered during lactation.

Storage:Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light.Keep out of reach of children.
