Nitoxin Tablet

Presentation:Nitoxin Tablet is available as film-coated tablets, each containing Nitazoxanide INN 500 mg.Nitoxin is a product of Aristopharma Ltd. 

Indications: Nitoxin (Nitazoxanide) is indicated for the treatment of diarrhoea caused by:

  • Cryptosporidium parvum   
  • Giardia lamblia   
  • Entamoeba histolytica  It is also effective against other protozoa, rotavirus, various helminths, Helicobacter pylori, and anaerobic bacteria.  

Dosage and Administration:Nitoxin 500 mg tablet should be swallowed whole with food every 12 hours for 3 days.The recommended dosage based on age is as follows:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 1 tablet (500 mg) every 12 hours with food for 3 days.
  • Children 4-11 years: Use Nitoxin suspension (100 mg/5 ml), 10 ml every 12 hours with food for 3 days.
  • Children 1-3 years: Use Nitoxin suspension (100 mg/5 ml), 5 ml every 12 hours with food for 3 days.

Side Effects: The most frequent side effects reported with Nitoxin are usually mild and transient and may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Headache  

Less frequent side effects may include nausea, anorexia, flatulence, increased appetite, enlarged salivary glands, increased creatinine and SGPT levels, pruritus, rhinitis, sweating, dizziness, and discoloured urine.

Precautions:Nitoxin (Nitazoxanide) is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to nitazoxanide or any other ingredients in the formulation.  

Caution should be exercised when administering Nitoxin to patients with hepatic and biliary disease, renal disease, or combined renal and hepatic disease.Nitazoxanide is highly bound to plasma proteins, so caution should be used when given with other highly plasma protein-bound drugs with a narrow therapeutic index (e.g., warfarin).  

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: The US FDA pregnancy category for Nitazoxanide is B. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed, as there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnantwomen. Nitazoxanide has been shown to be excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when administering it to a nursing woman.

Storage: Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
