Neurocet XR 750

Presentation:Each tablet contains 750 mg of levetiracetam in an extended-release formulation.

Indications: Neurocet XR (levetiracetam) is indicated for the treatment of epilepsy in adults and children for the following seizure types:

  • Adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures (including those with secondary generalization) in patients 1 month and older.
  • Adjunctive therapy for myoclonic seizures in patients 12 years and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.
  • Adjunctive therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients 6 yearsand older with idiopathic generalized epilepsy.
  • Monotherapy for partial-onset seizures (with or without secondary generalization) in adults and adolescents 16 years and older with newly diagnosed epilepsy.

Dosage and Administration: Neurocet XR 750 tablets are intended for oral administration once daily. The tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid and can be taken with or without food.

The dosage is individualized based on the patient's age, weight, kidney function, and the specific seizure disorder.

  • Adults and Adolescents (16 years and older): The usual starting dose is 1000 mg once daily, which may be increased every two weeks by 500 mg increments to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg once daily.
  • Children (4 to 15 years) and Adolescents (weighing less than 50 kg): The starting dose is typically 20 mg/kg once daily, titrated upwards every two weeks by 20 mg/kg to a maximum recommended daily dose of 60 mg/kg once daily.
  • Infants and Children (1 month to less than 4 years): An alternative formulation of levetiracetam is generally preferred for this age group due to the need for more precise and lower dose adjustments.
  • Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustment is required in patients with impaired renal function and will be determined by the physician based on creatinine clearance.
  • Elderly: Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients, especially those with reduced renal function.

It is crucial to adhere strictly to the physician's prescribed dosage and administration instructions. Abrupt cessation of Neurocet XR should be avoided due to the potential for increased seizure frequency. Discontinuation should be gradual and under medical supervision.

Side Effects: The most frequently reported adverse reactions with levetiracetam include:

  • Somnolence (drowsiness)
  • Asthenia (lack of energy)
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Other possible side effects, occurring less commonly, may include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain)
  • Behavioral and mood changes (irritability, aggression, anxiety, depression)
  • Nervousness
  • Insomnia
  • Anorexia (loss of appetite)
  • Weight loss
  • Memory impairment
  • Coordination problems
  • Skin rash

Serious adverse reactions, such as severe allergic reactions or significant behavioral changes (including suicidal thoughts or attempts), are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Precautions: Before initiating treatment with Neurocet XR, it is important to inform the physician about any existing medical conditions, particularly kidney or liver disease, and any history of psychiatric disorders.

Use in pregnancy should be carefully considered, and the potential risks and benefits should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Levetiracetam is excreted in breast milk, and breastfeeding is generally not recommended during treatment.

Neurocet XR may cause central nervous system depression, leading to drowsiness and dizziness. Patients should exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until they are aware of the medication's effects on their alertness.

Patients and their caregivers should be vigilant for any changes in mood or behavior and promptly report them to the physician.

Drug interactions with other medications are possible, so it is essential to inform the physician about all other medications being taken, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Storage: Store Neurocet XR 750 tablets at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Keep the medication out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date. Dispose of unused medication according to local regulations.
