Neofloxin 500 is a tablet containing 500 mg of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride equivalent to Ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Neofloxin 500 is manufactured by Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh. 

Indications:

Neofloxin 500 is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in adults in the following conditions: 

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Uncomplicated and complicated UTIs. 
• Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia. 
• Skin and Skin Structure Infections: Uncomplicated and complicated infections. 
• Bone and Joint Infections.
• Infectious Diarrhea.
• Typhoid Fever.

In children and adolescents, Neofloxin 500 may be used for: 

• Complicated Urinary Tract Infections and Pyelonephritis.
• Post-exposure prophylaxis and treatment of inhalational anthrax.

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage of Neofloxin 500 depends on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's age, weight, and renal function. The usual dosage guidelines are: 

Adults:

• Urinary Tract Infections:
  • Uncomplicated: 250 mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days. 
  • Complicated: 500 mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days. 
• Lower Respiratory Tract Infections:
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis: 500 mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days. 
  • Pneumonia: 500-750 mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days. 
• Skin and Skin Structure Infections:
  • Uncomplicated: 500 mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days. 
  • Complicated: 750 mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days. 
• Bone and Joint Infections: 500-750 mg every 12 hours for 4-8 weeks. 
• Infectious Diarrhea: 500 mg every 12 hours for 5-7 days. 
• Typhoid Fever: 500 mg every 12 hours for 7 days. 

Children and Adolescents:

• Complicated Urinary Tract Infections and Pyelonephritis (10 to 17 years): 500 mg every 12 hours for 10-21 days. 
• Post-exposure prophylaxis and treatment of inhalational anthrax:
  • Children: 10-15 mg/kg body weight every 12 hours for 60 days. 
  • Maximum single dose should not exceed 500 mg. 

Neofloxin 500 tablets should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food. However, it is recommended to take it with plenty of fluids. 

Important Considerations:

• Avoid taking antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, as well as sucralfate or products containing calcium or iron, at the same time as ciprofloxacin. These can interfere with the absorption of ciprofloxacin. Take ciprofloxacin at least two hours before or six hours after these products. 
• Ciprofloxacin can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you. 
• Ciprofloxacin can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or sunlamps. 
• Inform your doctor if you have a history of seizures, tendon problems, or kidney disease. 
• Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding is generally not recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. 

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include: 

• Nausea 
• Vomiting 
• Diarrhea 
• Abdominal pain 
• Headache 
• Dizziness 

Serious side effects can occur, including tendon problems, nerve damage, mood changes, and heart rhythm problems. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any serious side effects.
