Indications

Nebanol is indicated for the treatment of topical bacterial infections. It is particularly effective for:

• Atopic, contact stasis, and other eczematoid dermatitises.
• Neurodermatitis.
• Eczema.
• Anogenital pruritus. It can also be a useful adjunct to systemic antibiotic therapy for certain pyodermas, such as impetigo.

Pharmacology

This preparation combines two antibacterial agents:

• Bacitracin: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is effective against many gram-positive bacteria (e.g.,Staphylococcus and Streptococcus) and some gram-negative species.
• Neomycin: An aminoglycoside that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis. It is active against many gram-negative aerobes and some Staphylococcus strains.

Dosage & Administration

• Ointment: Clean the affected area gently before use, removing any pus or crusts. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area two to three times daily.
• Dusting Powder: A light dusting of the powder should be applied to the affected skin area up to four times daily. This is a non-sterile dusting powder for superficial skin infections.

Interaction

• Bacitracin Zinc: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs. May enhance the action of neuromuscular-blocking agents.
• Neomycin Sulphate: Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effects with other aminoglycosides and certain other drugs. It may impair the absorption of other drugs and may enhance the effect of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants and certain antidiabetic drugs.

Contraindications

Nebanol is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Side Effects

Nebanol is generally well-tolerated. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safe use of this preparation during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. It should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Precautions & Warnings

• The dusting powder should not be used on large open wounds, severely injured skin, or areas with large volumes of fluid, as hard crusts may form.
• Due to the risk of ototoxicity, the ointment should not be used to treat otitis externa if the eardrum is perforated.
• Patients should consult a physician for deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
• For minor injuries, the preparation should not be used for more than 1 week without a doctor's direction.

Use in Special Populations

• Children and Infants: The ointment is suitable for use in children at the same dose as adults, but the dose should be reduced for infants. It is not recommended for use in neonates.

Therapeutic Class

Nebanol is an ophthalmic and topical antibacterial product.
