Indications

Nebanol (Bacitracin and Neomycin) is a topical antibacterial product used for the treatment of various topical bacterial infections. It is particularly effective for atopic, contact, and stasis infections, as well as eczematoid dermatitis, neurodermatitis, eczema, and anogenital pruritus. It can also be a helpful addition to treatment for pyodermas like impetigo when systemic antibiotics are being used.

Pharmacology

• Bacitracin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It is effective against many Gram-positive bacteria, such as staphylococci and streptococci, as well as some Gram-negative bacteria.
• Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome. It is effective against many Gram-negative aerobes and certain strains of staphylococci. The combination provides a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect.

Dosage & Administration

• Ointment: Clean the affected area and gently remove any pus or crusts. Apply the ointment two to three times daily.
• Dusting Powder: This powder is non-sterile and is used for superficial skin infections. Apply a light dusting to the affected area up to four times daily.

Interaction

• Bacitracin: May increase the risk of kidney toxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs. It may also enhance the action of neuromuscular-blocking agents.
• Neomycin: Has additive kidney and nerve toxicity effects with other similar drugs. It may also impair the absorption of other drugs and enhance the effects of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Side Effects

Nebanol is generally well-tolerated. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safe use of this product during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. It should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant.

Precautions & Warnings

• The dusting powder should not be used on large, open wounds or severely injured skin, as it may form hard crusts.
• Because it contains Neomycin, this product should not be used for treating otitis externa (outer ear infection) if the eardrum is perforated, due to the risk of ototoxicity (hearing damage).
• For deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns, a physician should be consulted first.
• This medication should not be used for longer than one week unless a physician directs otherwise.

Use in Special Populations

• Children and Infants: The ointment is suitable for use in children at the same dose as adults, but the dose should be reduced in infants. It is not recommended for use in neonates.
