Naviscon

Presentation: Naviscon Suspension is an oral suspension. Each 10 ml typically contains Sodium Alginate BP 500 mg, Sodium Bicarbonate BP 267 mg, and Calcium Carbonate USP 160 mg. Naviscon is a product of Navana Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh and is usually available in 200 ml bottles. It is an off-white to cream viscous suspension, often with a peppermint or aniseed flavour.

Indications: Naviscon is indicated for the symptomatic relief of acid-related symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux such as:

  • Heartburn
  • Acid regurgitation
  • Indigestion
  • Flatulence associated with gastric reflux
  • Heartburn of pregnancy
  • All cases of epigastric and retrosternal distress where the underlying cause is gastric reflux.

It works by neutralizing excess stomach acid and forming a protective barrier (raft) over the stomach contents, thus soothing the burning pain in the chest and reducing oesophageal acid exposure.

Dosage and Administration: Naviscon Suspension is for oral administration. Shake well before use.

  • Adults and children over 12 years:10-20 ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day.
  • Children 6 to 12 years:5-10 ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day.
  • Children under 6 years:Not recommended.
  • Elderly:No dose modifications necessary.

A time interval of 2 hours should be considered between Naviscon intake and the administration of other medicinal products.

Side Effects: In addition to the desired effect, some side effects may occur, such as:

  • Constipation
  • Flatulence
  • Stomach cramp
  • Belching

If a very large dose is taken, a sensation of swelling might occur. In such cases, consult a physician. Allergic reactions, such as urticaria or bronchospasm, have been reported very rarely.

Precautions: Naviscon is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or any of the excipients.

Caution should be taken in patients with:

  • A highly restricted salt diet, as Naviscon contains sodium.
  • Hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis, and recurrent calcium-containing renal calculi, as Naviscon contains calcium carbonate.
  • Phenylketonuria (due to the aspartame content in some formulations).

If symptoms persist or treatment is required for more than 7 days continuously, medical advice should be sought.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Naviscon is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed, as its mode of action is physical and systemic absorption is minimal. However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before taking any medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Storage: Do not refrigerate or freeze. Store below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
