Milcal

Presentation: Tablets or capsules containing calcium, often as calcium carbonate, derived from a milk source or formulated to be similar in composition. The specific strength of elemental calcium will vary depending on the product available in Bangladesh. Some formulations may also include Vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption.

Indications: Milcal is indicated for the prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency. Calcium is essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth, as well as for proper muscle function, nerve transmission, and blood clotting. Milcal may be recommended for individuals with inadequate dietary calcium intake, such as the elderly, growing children and adolescents, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those at risk of or diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose is one or two tablets or capsules daily, preferably with or after a meal to enhance absorption, or as directed by a physician. The dosage for children should be determined by a doctor based on age and specific needs. Swallow the tablets or capsules whole with water.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated when taken as directed. Mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation or stomach upset may occur in some individuals. High doses of calcium can lead to hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood), with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, but this is less likely with standard doses.

Precautions: Use with caution in individuals with hypercalcemia (high calcium levels), hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine), kidney stones, or kidney disease. Consult a physician before use if you have hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, or are taking other medications, especially cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin) or thiazide diuretics, as interactions may occur. Individuals with a known milk allergy or lactose intolerance should check the product formulation carefully.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
