Mextil (Cefuroxime): A Second-Generation Cephalosporin

Mextil contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is a well-characterized antibacterial agent with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against a wide range of common Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, including beta-lactamase producing strains. Cefuroxime is used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and skin structure, and bone and joints, as well as gonorrhoea and early Lyme disease.

How Mextil Works (Pharmacology)

Cefuroxime works by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall:

• Bactericidal Action: It kills bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall.
• Beta-Lactamase Stability: Cefuroxime has good stability against bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes. This allows it to be effective against many bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics like ampicillin and amoxicillin.

Dosage & Administration

• Parenteral (Adults):
  • General infections: 750 mg three times daily by IM or IV injection. Up to 1.5 g three to four times daily for severe infections.
  • Surgical prophylaxis: 1.5 g IV at induction of anesthesia.
  • Gonorrhoea: 1.5 g as a single intramuscular dose.
• Parenteral (Children >3 months):
  • 30-100 mg/kg/day in divided doses.
