Mexclav, a combination of Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid, is indicated for treating a variety of infections caused by susceptible bacteria. This includes infections that may be resistant to other antibiotics.
Mexclav works through a two-part mechanism:
Mexclav tablets can be taken with or without food. The duration of treatment varies, but is typically 5 to 20 days depending on the infection.
Do not use Mexclav if you have a known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics or a history of pseudomembranous colitis.
Mexclav is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms. Rarely, allergic reactions such as angioedema, pruritus, rash, and anaphylaxis can occur.
While it's best to avoid all antibiotics in the first trimester if possible, Mexclav can be used safely in the later stages of pregnancy. It is excreted in breast milk in small amounts, so the possibility of sensitizing the infant should be considered.
Use with caution in patients taking potent diuretics or those with a history of colitis.
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
