Metsina Suspension - (200mg/5ml)

Presentation: Each 5 ml of Metsina Suspension contains Metronidazole Benzoate BP equivalent to Metronidazole 200 mg. Available in bottles of 60 ml.

Indications:Metsina (Metronidazole) is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat infections caused by bacteria and parasites. It is indicated for:  

  • The prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria.
  • The treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes.  
  • Urogenital trichomoniasis.  
  • Bacterial vaginosis (also known as non-specific vaginitis).  
  • All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal, extra-intestinal disease, and that of symptomless cyst passers).  
  • Giardiasis.  
  • Acute ulcerative gingivitis.  
  • Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.  
  • Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms.  
  • Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.  

Pharmacology:Metronidazole is a member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drugs and is classified therapeutically as an antiprotozoal agent.The 5-nitro group ofMetronidazole is reduced by anaerobes metabolically.The reduced form interacts with DNA and causes bactericidal action.  

Dosage and Administration: Dosage depends on the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. Always follow your doctor's prescription.

  • Adults & Children over 10 years:
    • Trichomoniasis: 200 mg three times daily or 400 mg twice daily for 7 days; or 800 mg in the morning and 1-2 gm at night for 2 days; or 2 gm as a single dose for 1 day.
    • Intestinal amoebiasis: 800 mg three times daily for 5 days.
    • Extra-intestinal & Asymptomatic amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days.
    • Giardiasis: 2 gm once daily for 3 days or 400 mg three times daily for 5-7 days.
    • Acute ulcerative gingivitis: 200 mg three times daily for 3 days.
    • Anaerobic infections: Loading dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg every 8 hours.
  • Children:
    • Trichomoniasis: Children 7-10 years: 100 mg three times daily; Children 3-7 years: 100 mg twice daily; Children 1-3 years: 50 mg three times daily for 7 days.
    • Intestinal amoebiasis: Children 7-10 years: 400 mg three times daily; Children 3-7 years: 200 mg four times daily; Children 1-3 years: 200 mg three times daily for 5 days.
    • Giardiasis: Children 7-10 years: 1 gm once daily; Children 3-7 years: 600-800 mg once daily; Children 1-3 years: 500 mg once daily for 3 days.  
    • Acute ulcerative gingivitis: Children 7-10 years: 100 mg three times daily; Children 3-7 years: 100 mg twice daily; Children 1-3 years: 50 mg three times daily for 3 days.  
    • Anaerobic infections: 7.5 mg/kg body weight every 8 hours.
  • Metsina Suspension should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before meals. Shake the bottle well before each use.

Side Effects:Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, metallic taste, and headache.Metsina may darken urine.  

Precautions:Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least one day afterwards due to the possibility of a disulfiram-like reaction. Use with caution in patients with CNS diseases or hepatic impairment.  

Pregnancy & Lactation: Metsina is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Use with caution during breastfeeding; breastfeeding should be held until treatment is finished. Consult your doctor.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
