Metsa 500
Presentation:
Metsa 500 is available as tablets containing 500 mg of metformin hydrochloride for oral administration. The tablets are usually white or off-white and may be film-coated.Specific packaging details will be mentioned on the product pack.
Indications:
Metsa 500 is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone have not provided adequate glycemic control. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin.Metformin may also be used in children from 10 years of age and adolescents as monotherapy or in combination with insulin.
Dosage and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 500 mg once or twice daily with meals. Dosage should be increased gradually based on blood glucose levels and tolerability, up to a maximum daily dose of 2000-2550 mg in adults and 2000 mg in children. It is recommended to take Metsa 500 with or after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water; do not crush or chew them.Dosage adjustments should be made by a healthcare professional based on individual needs and renal function. Renal function should be assessed before starting and regularly during treatment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, especially at the start of treatment. These usually resolve over time. Less common side effects include taste disturbance. A rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis, requiring immediate medical attention.Long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency.
Precautions:
Before taking Metsa 500, inform your doctor about any kidney or liver problems, heart failure, severe infections, dehydration, or excessive alcohol intake. Metformin is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²) and acute metabolic acidosis. Caution should be exercised in elderly patients due to potential decreased renal function. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Temporary discontinuation may be required for surgery or certain medical imaging procedures involving iodinated contrast.
Storage:
Store Metsa 500 tablets below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date mentioned on the packaging.
