Presentation: Meglu 850 is presented as tablets, each containing 850mg of metformin hydrochloride. The tablets are usually film-coated and available in blister packs.
Indications: Meglu (metformin) is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone have not been sufficient to control blood glucose levels. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin. In children from 10 years of age and adolescents,it may be used as monotherapy or in combination with insulin.
Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose for adults is 500mg or 850mg once or twice daily with meals. The dosage may be gradually increased based on blood glucose levels and tolerability, up to a maximum daily dose of 2550mg taken in divided doses.
For children (10 years and older) and adolescents, the usual starting dose is 500mg once daily with meals, which may be increased gradually to a maximum of 2000mg daily in divided doses.
The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should be taken with meals to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding the dosage and timing of Meglu. Regular monitoring of blood glucose is essential.
Side Effects: The most common side effects are gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, which often occur at the start of treatment and usually resolve spontaneously. Taking the medication with meals and a gradual increase in dose can help reduce these effects.
Less common side effects include a metallic taste in the mouth. Prolonged use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Rarely, a serious side effect called lactic acidosis can occur, especially in patients with kidney problems. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include feeling very weak or tired, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain with nauseaand vomiting, feeling cold, and dizziness or lightheadedness.
Precautions: Meglu (metformin) is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney disease, metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), and known hypersensitivity to metformin. It is generally not recommended in patients with liver disease or excessive alcohol intake.
Caution should be exercised in patients with moderate kidney impairment, heart failure, and in elderly patients. Temporary discontinuation of metformin may be necessary before surgery or certain medical procedures involving iodinated contrast agents.
Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, as there may be potential drug interactions. Regular monitoring of kidney function is recommended.
Storage: Store Meglu tablets in a dry place, away from light and heat, below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
