Leveron 500

Presentation:

Leveron 500 is available as film-coated tablets containing 500 mg of levetiracetam for oral administration.The tablets are usually oblong-shaped and may have specific markings or colors as detailed on the product packaging.

Indications:

Leveron 500 is indicated as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of:  

• Partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults, adolescents, children, and infants from 1 monthof age. 
• Myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy. 
• Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adultsand adolescents from 12 years of age with Idiopathic GeneralizedEpilepsy.  

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage of Leveron 500 should be individualized according to the patient's weight, age, and renal function.It is administered orally, usually in two divided doses per day.  

• Adults and adolescents (16 years and older):The usual initial therapeutic dose is 500 mg twice daily.The initial dose may be increased every 2 weeks to a maximum recommended daily dose of 1500 mg twice daily. 
• Children (4 to 15 years): The starting dose is typically 10 mg/kg twice daily. Dosage adjustments are made based on response and tolerability, up to a maximum of 30 mg/kg twice daily.
• Infants and children (1 month to < 4 years): A different formulation (oral solution) is usually preferred for this age group to allow for more accurate weight-based dosing. If tablets are used, appropriate dose adjustment is necessary.
• In patients with impaired renal function, the dosage needs to be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. 
• Leveron 500 tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid and can be taken with or without food.  

Side Effects:

Common side effects associated with levetiracetam may include:

• Somnolence (sleepiness) 
• Asthenia (lack of energy) 
• Headache 
• Dizziness 
• Nasopharyngitis (common cold)  

Less common but potentially significant side effects can include behavioral abnormalities (such as aggression, agitation, irritability, anxiety, depression), psychotic symptoms, and coordination difficulties. If any significant behavioral changes or mood disturbances occur, medical advice should be sought.

Precautions:

Before taking Leveron 500, inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially kidney problems or psychiatric disorders.

Levetiracetam may cause drowsiness and dizziness, especially at the beginning of treatment or with dose increases.Caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery until the effect of the medication is known.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks and benefits of using Leveron 500 with your doctor.

Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, andherbal supplements, as drug interactions may occur.

The dose of Leveron may need to be adjusted in patients with kidney impairment.

Storage:

Store Leveron 500 tablets below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture.Keep the medication out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date mentioned on the packaging.
