Lactoben 100ml 

Presentation:Lactoben 100ml is an oral solution available in Bangladesh.Each 5ml of the solution typically contains 3.35 grams of Lactulose.

Indications: Lactoben (Lactulose) is indicated for the treatment of:

• Constipation:It is used to promote bowel movements by softening the stool.  
• Hepatic Encephalopathy:It helps to reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood in patients with liver disease.  

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Lactoben 100ml should be as directed by a physician, based on the patient's condition and response. It is usually taken orally.

• For Constipation:

  • Adults (including the elderly):The usual starting dose is 15 ml twice daily.The dose may be adjusted to a maintenance dose of 15-30 ml once daily.
  • Children (5-17 years):The usual starting dose is 5-20 ml twice daily.  
  • Infants and Children under 5 years: Dosage should be determined by the physician.

• For Hepatic Encephalopathy: The dosage is individualized and may be higher, aiming to produce 2-3 soft stools per day.

Lactoben solution may be taken with water or fruit juice. It is often recommended to take it at bedtime as it may take 24-48 hours to produce an effect. It is advisable to take Lactoben at least 2 hours after other medications as it may interfere with their absorption.

Side Effects:Initial use of Lactoben may cause flatulence and abdominal discomfort or cramps, which are usually transient and disappear with continued therapy or dose adjustment.Excessive doses may lead to diarrhea and potential electrolyte imbalance, particularly potassium loss with prolonged use or misuse.

Precautions: Lactoben (Lactulose) should be used with caution in patients with:

• Lactose intolerance.
• Diabetes mellitus, as the high doses used in hepatic encephalopathy can affect blood sugar levels.
• Suspected intestinal obstruction or gastrointestinal disorders.
• Galactosemia (a rare genetic disorder).

Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:Lactulose is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.However, it is alwaysbest to consult a healthcare professionalbefore using any medication during these periods.
