Imucort 6 

Presentation: Imucort 6 Tablet, available in Bangladesh, contains Deflazacort 6 mg.

Indications: Imucort is a corticosteroid indicated for the treatment of a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. These include:

  • Musculoskeletal Disorders: Rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and others.
  • Respiratory Diseases: Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, sarcoidosis.
  • Allergic Conditions: Severe allergic reactions, allergic rhinitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis.
  • Dermatological Disorders: Pemphigus, bullous dermatitis herpetiformis, severe psoriasis, and others.
  • Endocrine Disorders: Primary or secondary adrenocortical insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
  • Ophthalmic Diseases: Severe inflammatory and allergic conditions of the eye.
  • Hematologic Disorders: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
  • Gastrointestinal Diseases: Ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease.
  • Renal Diseases: Nephrotic syndrome.
  • Neurological Diseases: Multiple sclerosis exacerbations.
  • Other Conditions: Organ transplantation, certain neoplastic conditions.

Dosage and Administration: The initial dosage of Imucort 6 varies depending on the specific disease being treated and the severity of the condition. Dosage requirements are variable and must be individualized based on the patient's response.

  • The usual starting dose for adults may range from 6 mg to 90 mg per day.
  • In children, the dose is usually calculated based on body weight.
  • The initial dose should be maintained or adjusted until a satisfactory response is observed.
  • After a favorable response is achieved, the maintenance dose should be determined by gradually reducing the initial dose to the lowest effective dose.
  • Imucort tablets should be taken orally with a glass of water, preferably at the same time each day. It can be taken with or withoutfood.
  • Do not stop taking Imucort suddenly, especially after long-term use, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms. The dose should be tapered gradually under the supervision of a physician.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include increased appetite, weight gain, fluid retention, mood changes, insomnia, nervousness, increased sweating, acne, and facial flushing.

Less frequent or more serious side effects can include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Increased blood sugar levels (may worsen diabetes)
  • Weakening of bones (osteoporosis)
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Cataracts and glaucoma (with long-term use)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Thinning of the skin, easy bruising
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Growth retardation in children

Precautions: Imucort is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections and known hypersensitivity to deflazacort or any of its components.

Caution should be exercised in patients with:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Liver disease
  • Peptic ulcer disease or a history of it
  • Osteoporosis
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Active or latent tuberculosis
  • Untreated systemic infections
  • Herpes simplex infection of the eye
  • Psychiatric disorders

Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be carefully considered, and only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus or infant. Children on long-term therapy should be closely monitored for growth and development.

Storage: Store Imucort 6 tablets in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
