Glinta (Linagliptin): Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) Inhibitor for Type 2 Diabetes

Glinta contains Linagliptin, an oral antidiabetic medication belonging to the DPP-4 inhibitor class. It works by blocking the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 enzyme, which normally breaks down natural incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) in the body. By keeping these hormone levels elevated, Glinta stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner and reduces glucagon secretion. This effectively lowers blood sugar levels without causing unexpected drops when blood sugar is already normal.

📋 Indications: Improving Glycemic Control

Glinta is indicated strictly for adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus:

  • As Monotherapy: For patients whose blood sugar cannot be managed by diet and exercise alone, and for whom Metformin is inappropriate due to intolerance or kidney function issues.

  • As Combination Therapy:

    • Combined with Metformin when Metformin alone plus lifestyle changes fail to control blood sugar.

    • Combined with Metformin and a Sulphonylurea (triple therapy) when dual therapy falls short.

🥄 Dosage and Flexible Administration

  • Standard Dose:5 mg once daily.

  • Timing: Can be taken with or without a meal at any time of the day.

  • Combination Adjustments: If added to Metformin, the Metformin dose remains the same. If added to a sulphonylurea, a lower dose of the sulphonylurea may be considered to reduce the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

  • Renal Impairment:No dosage adjustment is required for patients with kidney disease.

⚠️ Side Effects & Adverse Reactions

While generally well-tolerated, potential side effects—especially when used alongside Metformin and a sulphonylurea—include:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

  • Nasopharyngitis (cold-like symptoms or runny nose)

  • Cough

  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

🛑 Contraindications & Drug Interactions

  • Contraindications: Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to Linagliptin or any of the capsule ingredients.

  • Interactions: Glinta has a very low risk of clinically meaningful drug interactions. Clinical studies show it does not significantly alter the behavior or effectiveness of Metformin, Glyburide, Simvastatin, Warfarin, Digoxin, or oral contraceptives.

🤰 Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy (Category B): There are no adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Glinta should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed and specifically prescribed by a physician.

  • Lactation: It is currently unknown whether Linagliptin passes into human breast milk. Caution should be exercised if you are nursing.

📦 Storage Conditions

  • Keep stored in a dry place, safely away from direct light and heat.

  • Always keep out of the reach and sight of children.
