Gavisus

Presentation: Gavisus is available as a peppermint-flavored, off-white to cream coloured liquid oral suspension. It is typically available in a 200 ml PET bottle, often packaged with a measuring cup. Each 10 ml of the suspension contains Sodium Alginate BP 500 mg, Sodium Bicarbonate BP 267 mg, and Calcium Carbonate BP 160 mg. Gavisus is a product of The ACME Laboratories Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Indications: Gavisus is indicated for the symptomatic relief of acid-related symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux such as:

• Heartburn
• Acid regurgitation
• Indigestion
• Flatulence associated with gastric reflux 
• Heartburn of pregnancy 
• All cases of epigastric and retrosternal distress where the underlying cause is gastric reflux. 

Dosage and Administration:  Gavisus Suspension is for oral administration. Shake the bottle well before use.

• Adults and children over 12 years:10-20 ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. 
• Children 6 to 12 years:5-10 ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. 
• Children under 6 years:Not recommended. 
• Elderly:No dosage modificationis necessary.

A time interval of 2 hours should be considered between the intake of Gavisus and other medicinal products, especially certain antibiotics (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones), digoxin, iron salts, ketoconazole, neuroleptics, thyroid hormones, penicillamine, and beta-blockers.

Side Effects: In addition to the desired effect, some side effects may occur, such as:

• Constipation
• Flatulence
• Stomach cramp
• Belching

If a very large dose is taken, a sensation of swelling might occur. In such cases, consult a physician. Allergic reactions, such as urticaria or bronchospasm, have been reported very rarely.

Precautions: Gavisus is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or any of the excipients.

Caution should be taken in patients with:

• A highly restricted salt diet, as each 10 ml dose contains 141 mg (6.2 mmol) of sodium. This should be considered in conditions like congestive cardiac failure and renal impairment.
• Hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis (calcium deposits in the kidneys), and recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones, due to the calcium carbonate content. Each 10 ml dose contains 160 mg (1.6 mmol) of calcium carbonate.

If symptoms do not improve after 7 days, the clinical situation should be reviewed.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:Clinical studies in more than 500 pregnant women, as well as a large amount of data from post-marketing experience, indicate no malformative nor feto/neonatal toxicity of the active ingredients.Gavisus can be used during pregnancy if clinically needed. No effects of the active substances have been shown in breastfed newborns/infants of treated mothers.Gavisus can be used during breastfeeding.

Storage:Store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
