Presentation: This product is typically available as a liquid oral suspension in bottles of various sizes, such as 100 ml or 200 ml. It often has a mint or aniseed flavour and is off-white to cream in colour. Each 10 ml usually contains Sodium Alginate BP 500 mg, Sodium Bicarbonate BP 213 mg (or 267 mg in some formulations), and Calcium Carbonate USP 325 mg (or 160 mg in some formulations). Always check the product label for the specific formulation.

Indications: This medication is indicated for the symptomatic relief of acid-related symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux, such as:

• Heartburn
• Acid regurgitation
• Indigestion
• Flatulence associated with gastric reflux
• Heartburn of pregnancy
• Epigastric and retrosternal distress where the underlying cause is gastric reflux.

It works by forming a protective layer on top of the stomach contents, which helps to prevent stomach acid from rising into the oesophagus.

Dosage and Administration: This suspension is for oral administration and should be taken after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. Shake the bottle well before use.

• Adults and children over 12 years: 10-20 ml.
• Children 6 to 12 years: 5-10 ml.
• Children under 6 years: Not recommended unless advised by a doctor.
• Elderly: Dosage is the same as for adults.

A time interval of about 2 hours is generally recommended between taking this medication and other oral medicines.

Side Effects: This medication is generally well-tolerated when used as directed. However, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as:

• Constipation
• Flatulence
• Stomach cramps
• Belching

Very rarely, allergic reactions like skin rash, itching, or difficulty breathing can occur. If you experience any unusual symptoms, discontinue use and consult a doctor.

Precautions: This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients or excipients.

Caution should be taken in patients with:

• A highly restricted salt diet, as it contains sodium.
• Hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis (calcium deposits in the kidneys), or recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones, due to the calcium carbonate content.
• Phenylketonuria (if the formulation contains aspartame).

If symptoms persist for more than 7 days, medical advice should be sought.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: This type of medication is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed, as its action is mainly physical and systemic absorption is minimal. However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before taking any medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding. 

Storage: Store below 30°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
