Presentation: Usually available as a cream containing Estriol. Strength is typically 0.5 mg estriol per application or per gram of cream.
Indications: Treatment of symptoms of vaginal atrophy due to estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women. Symptoms may include vaginal dryness, itching, burning, and dyspareunia (painful intercourse).
Dosage & Administration: The usual initial dose is one application (cream filled in the applicator up to the ring mark) once daily for the first 2-3 weeks. Thereafter, the maintenance dose is usually one application 2-3 times per week, as directed by the physician. For topical use in the vagina. Follow the instructions provided with the applicator carefully.
Side Effects: Common: local irritation, itching, burning sensation in the vagina. Less common: breast tenderness, fluid retention. Rare: systemic estrogenic effects, such as nausea, headache, or spotting, may occur, especially with prolonged use or higher doses.
Precautions: Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, known or suspected estrogen-dependent tumors (e.g., endometrial cancer, breast cancer), history of thromboembolic disorders, severe liver disease. Use with caution in patients with endometriosis, uterine fibroids, epilepsy, migraine, asthma, hypertension, or cardiac/renal insufficiency. Not for contraceptive use.
