Etnol Tablet - (50mg)

Generic Name: Atenolol

Manufacturer: Biopharma Limited

Strength: Each tablet contains Atenolol BP 50 mg.

Indications:

Etnol is indicated for:

  • Management of hypertension. It may be used alone or with other antihypertensive agents, particularly thiazide diuretics.
  • Long-term management of angina pectoris.
  • Management of hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction to reduce cardiovascular mortality.
  • Management of cardiac dysrhythmias.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Hypertension: Initial dose is 50 mg once daily, either alone or added to diuretic therapy. Full effect usually seen within 1-2 weeks. If optimal response not achieved, increase to 100 mg once daily. Doses beyond 100 mg daily are unlikely to provide further benefit.
  • Angina Pectoris: Initial dose is 50 mg once daily. If optimal response not achieved within one week, increase to 100 mg once daily. Some patients may require 200 mg once daily for optimal effect.
  • Acute Myocardial Infarction:
    • Early Intervention: 5 mg IV over 5 minutes, followed by another 5 mg IV 10 minutes later. In patients tolerating the full IV dose, initiate 50 mg orally 10 minutes after the last IV dose, followed by another 50 mg orally 12 hours later. Thereafter, give 100 mg once daily or 50 mg twice daily for a further 6-9 days or until hospital discharge.
    • Late Intervention: 100 mg daily for long-term prophylaxis of myocardial infarction.
  • Dosage may need adjustment in patients with renal impairment and in the elderly.

Contraindications:

  • Sinus bradycardia.
  • Heart block greater than first degree.
  • Cardiogenic shock.
  • Overt cardiac failure.
  • Hypersensitivity to atenolol or any component of the product.

Side Effects:

  • Cold extremities.
  • Muscular fatigue.
  • Bradycardia.
  • Sleep disturbances (rare).
  • Rashes and dry eyes have been reported with beta-blockers; consider discontinuance if they occur.

Precautions:

  • Patients already on a beta-blocker must be carefully evaluated before Etnol is administered.
  • Initial and subsequent dosages can be adjusted downward depending on clinical observations (pulse and blood pressure).
  • May aggravate peripheral arterial circulatory disorders.
  • Avoid in overt heart failure, anesthesia, and chronic obstructive airway disease or asthma.
  • Withdrawal of beta-blocking drugs should be gradual in patients with ischemic heart disease.
  • Withdrawal of clonidine.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Atenolol can cross the placenta and may cause fetal harm. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
  • Atenolol is excreted in breast milk and should not be given to nursing mothers.

Storage:

  • Store as directed by the manufacturer.
