Indications:
Treatment of epilepsy (all seizure types including absence, tonic-clonic, myoclonic)
Prophylaxis of migraine
Bipolar disorder maintenance therapy
Dosage & Administration:
Adults (Epilepsy): Start with 600 mg/day in 2 doses (max 2500 mg/day)
Children: 20-30 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses
Migraine prophylaxis: 500 mgâ1.5 g/day
Take with food to reduce GI irritation
CR tablets: Swallow whole (do not crush)
Side Effects:
Common:
Nausea, vomiting
Weight gain
Tremor
Hair loss (usually temporary)
Serious (require immediate medical attention):
Liver toxicity (dark urine, jaundice)
Pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain)
Thrombocytopenia (unusual bruising/bleeding)
Precautions:
Contraindicated in:
Active liver disease
Porphyria
Known mitochondrial disorders
High-risk groups:
Children <3 years (higher hepatotoxicity risk)
