Empaglif 25

Presentation: Tablets containing 25 mg of empagliflozin

Indications: Empaglif 25 is a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor indicated:

  • In adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
  • To reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus andestablished cardiovascular disease.
  • To reduce the risk of cardiovascular deathand hospitalization for heart failure in adults with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Dosage and Administration: The recommended starting dose for glycemic control is 10 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily in patients who tolerate 10 mg and require additional glycemic control. For reducing the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovasculardisease or in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, the recommended dose is 10 mg once daily. Empaglif 25 (25 mg) is typically used for patients requiring a higher dose for glycemic control. It can be taken orally once daily, at any time of day, with or without food.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include urinary tract infections, genital fungal infections, increased urination, and thirst. Other possible side effects include nausea and increased serum creatinine. A rare but serious side effect is diabetic ketoacidosis. Report any persistent or troublesome side effects to your doctor immediately.

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially kidney disease, a history of urinary tract infections or genital infections, or low blood pressure.
  • Empaglif 25 should not be used in patients with severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease.
  • Caution should be exercised in patients at risk of volume depletion (e.g., those on diuretics, elderly patients).
  • There have been reports of ketoacidosis in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes receiving SGLT2 inhibitors. Patients should be educated on the symptoms of ketoacidosis (e.g., difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain) and seek immediate medical attention if they occur.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as Empaglif 25 is generally not recommended during these periods.
  • Be aware of potential drug interactions and inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
