Presentation: Tablets containing 25 mg empagliflozin.
Indications: Indicated in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Empagliflozin is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease.
Dosage and Administration:The recommendedstarting dose is 10 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily in patients who are tolerating 10 mg and require additional glycemic control. It can be taken with or without food, preferably in the morning. Renal function should be assessed prior to initiation and periodically thereafter. Empagliflozin is not recommended for use in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m². Follow physician's instructions based on individual patient needs.
Side Effects: Common adverse reactions include urinary tract infections and female genital mycotic infections. Increased urination and thirst may occur due to the diuretic effect of empagliflozin. Less common but potentially serious side effects include diabetic ketoacidosis (more likely in patients with type 1 diabetes or other risk factors) and acute kidney injury. Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of these conditions.
Precautions: Not recommended for use in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²) or end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis. Use with caution in patients with moderate renal impairment (eGFR 30 to < 60 mL/min/1.73 m²), those at risk for volume depletion (e.g., elderly patients, patients on diuretics, or those with low systolic blood pressure), and patients with a history of urinary tract infections. Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of ketoacidosis.
Storage: Store below 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
