Presentation: Diaplus Tablet, available in Bangladesh, contains Glipizide BP as the active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is formulated as an oral tablet and is typically available in blister packs or strips containing a specific number of tablets. The strength commonly available is 5 mg per tablet.
Indications: Diaplus is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. It works by stimulating the release of insulin from the beta cells in the pancreas and by increasing the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin. In some patients receiving insulin therapy, Diaplus may be used to lower insulin requirements.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Diaplus must be individualized based on the patient's blood glucose levels and response to treatment. It is generally recommended to administer Diaplus orally approximately 30 minutes before a meal to optimize its effect on postprandial blood glucose.
Side Effects: The most common side effect associated with Glipizide, and thus Diaplus, is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The risk of hypoglycemia is increased when meals are skipped, during strenuous exercise, or when used in combination with other antidiabetic agents or alcohol. Other potential side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and constipation; dermatologic reactions such as rash and pruritus; and transient visual disturbances. Less common side effects may include headache, dizziness, and weight gain. Rare but serious side effects can include blood dyscrasias and liver abnormalities.
Precautions: Diaplus is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to glipizide or other sulfonylureas, type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, and severe renal or hepatic impairment. It should be used with caution in elderly or debilitated patients, and in patients with adrenal or pituitary insufficiency. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can potentiate the hypoglycemic effect of Glipizide. Certain medications can interact with Glipizide, affecting blood glucose control. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential during treatment.
Storage: Store Diaplus tablets in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep this medication out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date stated on the packaging.
