Deltasone

Presentation: Deltasone tablets contain prednisone and are available in various strengths, including 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 50 mg. The tablets vary in color depending on the strength (e.g., pink for 2.5 mg, white for 5 mg and 10 mg, peach for 20 mg). They are typically round and scored. Packaging is usually in bottles.

Indications: Prednisone, the active ingredient in Deltasone, is a corticosteroid used to treat a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Endocrine Disorders: Primary or secondary adrenocortical insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hypercalcemia associated with cancer, nonsuppurative thyroiditis. 
  • Rheumatic Disorders: Psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (including juvenile), ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis, tenosynovitis, gouty arthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, synovitis of osteoarthritis, epicondylitis.
  • Collagen Diseases:Systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic dermatomyositis (polymyositis), acute rheumatic carditis. 
  • Dermatologic Diseases:Pemphigus,bullous dermatitis herpetiformis, severe erythema multiforme (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), exfoliative dermatitis, mycosis fungoides, severe psoriasis, severe seborrheic dermatitis. 
  • Allergic States:   Seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, serum sickness, drug hypersensitivity reactions. 
  • Ophthalmic Diseases:Severe acute and chronic allergic and inflammatory processes involving theeye.
  • Respiratory Diseases: Symptomatic sarcoidosis, Loeffler's syndrome, berylliosis, aspiration pneumonitis. 
  • Hematologic Disorders:Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, secondary thrombocytopenia, acquired (autoimmune) hemolytic anemia, erythroblastopenia,congenital hypoplastic anemia. 
  • Neoplastic Diseases:Palliative management of leukemias and lymphomas in adults and acute leukemia of childhood. 
  • Edematous States:Toinduce diuresis or remission of proteinuriain nephrotic syndrome.
  • Gastrointestinal Diseases:Ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis. 
  • Nervous System:Acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis. 
  • Miscellaneous:Tuberculous meningitiswith subarachnoid block or impending block(with antituberculous chemotherapy), trichinosis with neurologic or myocardial involvement.  

Dosage and Administration:The initialdosage of Deltasone may vary from 5 to 60 mg per day, depending on the specific disease being treated. Dosage adjustments are made based on the patient's response and the condition. It is usually taken orally with food to minimize stomach upset. If taken once daily, it is generally administered in the morning. In long-term therapy, withdrawal should be gradual to avoid adrenal insufficiency. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully regarding dosage and administration.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include increased appetite, weight gain, fluid retention, mood changes, trouble sleeping, acne, and slow wound healing. Long-term use may lead to more serious side effects such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma, increased risk of infection, and adrenal insufficiency. Tell your doctor if you experience any bothersome or unusual side effects.

Precautions: Deltasone is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections. Use with caution in patients with a history of tuberculosis, heart failure, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, glaucoma, cataracts, peptic ulcer, mental illness, and other medical conditions. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before starting Deltasone. Long-term use in children may affect growth. Do not stop taking Deltasone suddenly if you have been on it for more than a few weeks, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

Storage: Store Deltasone tablets at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
