Indications:
Deltapred, containing prednisolone, is a corticosteroid with predominantly glucocorticoid properties. It is indicated for a wide range of conditions including rheumatic disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis), endocrine disorders (e.g., adrenocortical insufficiency), dermatologic diseases (e.g., severe psoriasis), allergic states (e.g., bronchial asthma, severe allergic rhinitis), respiratory diseases (e.g., symptomatic sarcoidosis), hematologic disorders, neoplastic diseases, edematous states (e.g., nephrotic syndrome), gastrointestinal diseases (e.g., ulcerative colitis), ophthalmic diseases, and other miscellaneous conditions requiring corticosteroid therapy.
Dosage and Administration:
The initial dosage of Deltapred varies depending on the specific disease and its severity, ranging from 5 mg to 60 mg per day. It is usually administered orally in single or divided doses. After achieving a satisfactory response, the dosage should be gradually reduced to the lowest effective maintenance dose. Dosage requirements are variable and must be individualized based on the disease and the patient's response. It is often recommended to take Deltapred with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal irritation.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Deltapred may include increased appetite, weight gain, fluid retention, elevated blood pressure, mood changes, insomnia, increased blood glucose levels, and acne. Long-term use may lead to more serious side effects such as osteoporosis, muscle weakness, increased risk of infections, adrenal suppression, cataracts, and glaucoma.
Precautions:
Before initiating Deltapred, inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions, including infections, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart failure, kidney or liver disease, osteoporosis, peptic ulcer disease, glaucoma, psychiatric disorders, and tuberculosis. Prolonged use can suppress the adrenal gland function, and withdrawal should be gradual. Patients on Deltapred may have a weakened immune system and should avoid exposure to certain infections. Live vaccines should generally not be administered during corticosteroid therapy.
Storage:
Store Deltapred tablets below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep the medication out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date stated on the packaging.
