Cosec Mups 40 

Presentation: Cosec Mups 40, available in Bangladesh, contains Omeprazole 40 mg in a Multiple Unit Pellet System (MUPS) tablet formulation. These are enteric-coated micro pellets compressed into a tablet, designed to protect the drug from stomach acid and ensure release in the small intestine. Cosec Mups 40 is a product of Drug International Ltd. and is usually available in blister packs.

Indications: Cosec Mups (Omeprazole) is indicated for the treatment of acid-related disorders, including:

• Duodenal ulcer
• Gastric ulcer
• NSAID-induced gastric and duodenal ulcers
• Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), including symptomatic relief and healing of erosive esophagitis
• Long-term management of acid reflux disease
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
• Helicobacter pylori eradication (in combination with appropriate antibiotics)

Dosage and Administration: Cosec Mups 40 tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should not be chewed or crushed. It is recommended to take it on an empty stomach, at least one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. If patients have trouble swallowing, the tablet can be dispersed in a glass of non-carbonated water, stirred until disintegrated, and the liquid should be drunk within 30 minutes. Stir again before drinking any remaining liquid. The dosage depends on the condition being treated and the physician's instructions.

• Gastric Ulcer: 40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks.
• Duodenal Ulcer: 20 mg once daily for 2-4 weeks; in severe cases, 40 mg once daily.
• GERD: 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks; for severe cases or if healing is incomplete, 40 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks may be considered. Maintenance dose is usually 20 mg once daily.
• H. pylori Eradication: 20 mg twice daily for one week, in combination with antibiotics.
• Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Starting dose is 60 mg once daily, adjusted based on clinical response.

Side Effects: Cosec Mups (Omeprazole) is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects may include headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, and dizziness. Less common side effects can include constipation, dry mouth, insomnia, and skin rash. Long-term use may be associated with an increased risk of bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and vitamin B12 deficiency in some individuals.

Precautions: Cosec Mups (Omeprazole) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any other components of the formulation. Gastric malignancy should be excluded before initiating therapy. Caution should be exercised in patients with severe liver dysfunction and during pregnancy and breastfeeding; consult your doctor before use. Omeprazole can interact with several other medications, including certain antifungals, anticoagulants, and antiretrovirals.  

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
