Clavusef 500: A Combination Antibiotic for Resistant Infections

Clavusef 500 is an antibiotic designed to treat a variety of bacterial infections, especially those caused by bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes, which can make them resistant to other antibiotics. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

How Clavusef 500 Works (Pharmacology)

Clavusef 500 combines two active ingredients: Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid.

  • Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting their cell wall synthesis. It does this by interfering with a process called transpeptidation, which is vital for building the bacterial cell wall.
  • Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamase enzymes are produced by some bacteria to break down antibiotics like Cefuroxime, making them ineffective. Clavulanic acid irreversibly binds to and inactivates these enzymes, protecting Cefuroxime and allowing it to effectively kill resistant bacteria.

This combination ensures that Clavusef 500 can combat infections that might otherwise be difficult to treat.

Key Indications & Benefits

Clavusef 500 is indicated for a broad range of bacterial infections, including:

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Pharyngitis, tonsillitis (caused by Streptococcus pyogenes), acute bacterial otitis media, acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis.
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis.
  • Skin and Skin-Structure Infections: Uncomplicated infections like impetigo.
  • Urinary Tract Infections: Uncomplicated cases.
  • Bone and Joint Infections.
  • Uncomplicated Gonorrhea.
  • Early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans).
  • Severe Systemic Infections: Septicemia, meningitis.
  • MDR Typhoid Fever (Multi-Drug Resistant Typhoid Fever).
  • Switch Therapy: Can be used as an oral follow-up to injectable antibiotic treatment.

Dosage & Administration

Clavusef 500 can be taken without regard to food. Always complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if you start feeling better, to prevent the infection from recurring or becoming harder to treat.

Adolescents and Adults (13 years and older):

  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis, Secondary Bacterial Infections of Acute Bronchitis, Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections, Community Acquired Pneumonia: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days (bronchitis exacerbation for 10 days; skin infections for 10 days).
  • Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections: 250 mg twice daily for 7-10 days.
  • Uncomplicated Gonorrhea: 1000 mg twice daily as a single dose.
  • MDR Typhoid Fever: 500 mg twice daily for 10-14 days.
  • Early Lyme Disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days.

Pediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years):

  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 20 mg/kg/day twice daily for 5-10 days.
  • Acute Otitis Media, Acute Bacterial Maxillary Sinusitis, Impetigo: 30 mg/kg/day twice daily for 10 days.

Important Considerations & Warnings

Discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Clavusef 500.

Contraindications:

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Patients with Pseudomembranous Colitis.

Side Effects: Generally well tolerated. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain. Rarely (less than 0.2%), more severe reactions like renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction), angioedema (swelling), pruritus, rash, and serum sickness-like urticaria may occur. Prolonged use of broad-spectrum antibiotics can sometimes lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms.

Interactions:

  • Probenecid: Increases the level of Cefuroxime in the blood.
  • Drugs that reduce gastric acidity (e.g., antacids): May decrease the absorption and effectiveness of Cefuroxime.
  • Alcohol: Interaction with alcohol is unknown. Consult your doctor.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: While all antibiotics are ideally avoided in the first trimester, Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid can generally be used safely in later pregnancy to treat bacterial infections like urinary infections. Use only if clearly needed and advised by your doctor.
  • Lactation: Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid is excreted in small quantities into breast milk. It's considered safe for use during breastfeeding, but the possibility of sensitizing the infant should be kept in mind. Consult your doctor.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Hypersensitivity: Use with care in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to other drugs, particularly penicillins, due to potential cross-allergenicity. If an allergic reaction occurs (e.g., itchy rash, swelling of face/throat/tongue, breathing difficulties), stop the medication immediately and inform your doctor.
  • Diuretics: Use with caution in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics.
  • History of Colitis: Administer with care to patients with a history of colitis.
  • Diarrhea: Diarrhea may occur; consider taking probiotics. If you notice bloody stools or develop abdominal cramps, contact your doctor.
  • Do not use leftover medicine for future infections.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
