Ciprocin: A Broad-Spectrum Quinolone Antibiotic

Ciprocin is a synthetic quinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those resistant to other antibiotics. It is effective against both Gram-negative (like Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and many Gram-positive bacteria (including methicillin-resistant staphylococci).

How Ciprocin Works (Pharmacology)

Ciprocin contains Ciprofloxacin, which exerts its bactericidal effect by interfering with bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA synthesis. This action prevents bacterial replication and survival. It is well-absorbed orally, widely distributed in tissues, and has a half-life of about 3.5 hours.

Key Indications

Ciprocin is indicated for single or mixed infections, including:

  • Severe Systemic Infections: Septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, infections in immunocompromised patients, infected burns.
  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Pneumonia, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis exacerbations, bronchiectasis.
  • Urinary Tract Infections: Urethritis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Infected ulcers, wounds, abscesses, cellulitis, otitis externa.
  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Enteric fever, infective diarrhea.
  • Biliary Tract Infections: Cholangitis, cholecystitis.
  • Intra-abdominal Infections: Peritonitis, abscesses.
  • Bone and Joint Infections: Osteomyelitis, septic arthritis.
  • Pelvic Infections: Salpingitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory diseases.
  • Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Infections: Otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis.
  • Gonorrhea: Including resistant strains.

Dosage & Administration

Dosage varies based on infection type and severity, patient age, weight, and renal function. It can be taken with or without food, but avoid taking it with antacids, sucralfate, or dairy products (except calcium as part of a meal), as these can reduce absorption.

  • Adults (Oral): Typically 100-750 mg twice daily. Specific doses for UTIs, respiratory infections, gonorrhea, and others.
  • Extended-release tablet (UTI): 1000 mg once daily for 3 days.
  • IV Infusion: Doses vary (200-400 mg every 8-12 hours) depending on the infection.
  • Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustment may be needed for severe impairment (reduce total daily dose by half).
  • Children/Adolescents: Generally not recommended due to joint damage risk in immature animals; use only if benefits outweigh risks (7.5-15 mg/kg/day in two divided doses).
  • Duration: 5-10 days for acute infections; continue for 3 days after symptom resolution.

Side Effects

Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain) and CNS effects (headache, dizziness, confusion). More severe, rare side effects include Stevens-Johnson syndrome, retinal detachment risk, hypoglycemia, and mental health issues.

Contraindications & Warnings

  • Contraindicated: Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
  • Precautions: Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders (e.g., epilepsy).
  • Pregnancy/Lactation: Not recommended due to potential joint effects in immature animals and excretion in milk.

Storage

Keep below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, out of reach of children.

Always consult a registered physician for medication use.
